About Black 20
The Black20 story is one of perseverance, gumption, and blind faith.
Our journey began in 2003 as glorified tour guides for a major television network. In between giving studio tours to 300lb women from Arkansas, we wrote a script for a broadband comedy show. The pilot episode of Out of Context was shot on the roof of a dingy, Manhattan apartment and produced on a shoestring budget.
With little interest, and even fewer industry contacts, we did the only thing we could. We stalked the President of our Network, and coordinated an ambush on his elevator. That 20-second conversation led to the biggest meeting of our careers.
We sat with the President, in his executive office, and showed him our pilot. As luck would have it, he bought our show and offered us our dream jobs. Suddenly, Out of Context was slated to lead the network's new digital platform.
Life at the major network lost its luster when our show budget was cut and we realized that we would not even be given the resources to make the show we were hired to make.
With few options, and a determination to make our show the way we wanted to make it, our team walked out of the building, hopped in a car, and drove down to Atlantic City. 124 miles of scenic New Jersey highway and eight servings of chicken fries later, we stopped outside The Taj Mahal Casino. Our cameras rolled as we placed our production money on a single spin of the roulette wheel.
Stupid? You betcha. But we knew we would win. We could not afford to lose.
In a last second decision we placed it all on black. What was seconds felt like days, and what felt like our hearts exploding was actually our hearts exploding. But when the roulette ball finally came to a rest, it sunk into Black20.
We went nuts. It was a huge win for our team. And though it didn't change our network's ill-fated plans (Our content sits on the shelf and collects dust even now), that day reminded us to always trust our guts and solidified us forever.
The one project we managed to leak was the viral video "The Easter Bunny Hates You". This two-minute video was seen by millions, is on numerous Best of 2006 lists, and finally gave us a taste of online success. Inspired by this experience and trusting in the relationship we had formed with each other, we abandoned our careers to start our own broadband network.
From giving tours, to rooftop pilots, to executive offices, to the Taj Mahal, to Brooklyn and now to Queens, Black20 is a team that has been through a lot and is very excited about what lies ahead.
We appreciate all your support.
