Even if you haven’t seen The Dark Knight yet, you’ve no doubt heard about the incredible work done by Heath Ledger in the role of the Joker. You’ve also probably heard that Heath Ledger is dead.
In the world of comic books you never know when you will see a villain pop up again, but who could fill his clown shoes?

Here’s The List of possible replacements:
6. Christian Bale:
Everyone remembers American Psycho, right? This could be the best use of the same actor in two roles since Jean-Claude Van Damme in Double Impact. Double the Van Damage!!
5. Viggo Mortensen
Viggo has proven that he likes taking roles where the character has a lot of depth, and can be menacing when he needs to be. He’s also proven he likes roles with horses.
4. Crispin Glover:
Glover has the look, and the oddness to play the Joker, but it’s possible he’s just too creepy to be the Joker. The truer that feels, the more we think someone should take Glover into custody immediately. I’m sure there’s a law that allows for that now, right? What’s the point of Homeland Security if it can’t lock up Crispin Glover for giving us the willies?

3. Andy Dick:
Probably too zany to follow up Ledger, but he’s already got the creepy criminal part down. Take a look at his recent mugshot if you need any more convincing.
2. Johnny Depp:
Depp’s name has floated around the Joker since forever. He could be great with the comic parts of the Joker but would struggle, by comparison, at the intense parts. It’s worth noting that Depp will be replacing Ledger in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. But then, so is Colin Farrell, so who knows if that means anything.
1. Daniel Day Lewis:
DDL has the opposite problem as Depp. He’d be amazing with the intense parts of the Joker’s performance, the question is whether or not he can pull off the malicious dark humor the Joker needs. There would, however, be a handful of impossibly amazing scenes with Lewis in the makeup. Given the reputation he has about preparing for roles, everyone would have to be concerned about the Joker claiming another actor.

Mark Hamill. His Joker voice in the old television series was wonderful.

I vote that they leave the Joker alone. At least for a couple of years.

gpsonics, They say he was extremely good and will be hard to replace. Besides what is the statute of limitations. Can they try to humorously mention that, in case you missed it, Archduke Franz Ferdinand is dead.

The problem with Daniel Day Lewis is physique. Isn't he freakishly tall? I'd be afraid of him towering over Batman, and Batman in platform shoes is weird. It only works for Rorsahrch. Plus he's very broad, and he's also not one to take secondary roles. If He's in a movie, he's up front.
